Thermal tolerance in cutthroat trout of the southern Rocky Mountains

چکیده

With temperatures expected to rise across the southern Rocky Mountains, ability of native fishes tolerate stream warming has become a critical concern for those tasked with preserving coldwater species. We used common garden experiments evaluate thermal tolerance cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarkii) fry from five populations important managers representing three sub-species. Critical maxima (CTMs) were evaluated through traditional exposure trials, while optimal growth and ultimate upper incipient lethal (UUILTs) examined over course 21-day trials at six static temperature treatments. Whereas CTMs differed among (mean = 27.91 °C, SD 0.35 °C), UUILTs did not 24.40 0.04 °C). Comparison cubic temperature-growth functions quadratic showed that adding third-order term can improve model fit, revealed substantial differences in (15.4–18.3 Knowledge these thresholds will help predict consequences climate, identify suitable habitats repatriation, inform water quality standards established protect fish into future.

Nonnative Trout Invasions Combined with Climate Change Threaten Persistence of Isolated Cutthroat Trout Populations in the Southern Rocky Mountains

Effective conservation of Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lineages native to the Rocky Mountains will require estimating effects of multiple stressors and directing management toward the most important ones. Recent analyses have focused on the direct and indirect effects of a changing climate on contemporary ranges, which are much reduced from historic ranges owing to past habitat loss and...

Patterns of hybridization among cutthroat trout and rainbow trout in northern Rocky Mountain streams

Introgressive hybridization between native and introduced species is a growing conservation concern. For native cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow trout in western North America, this process is thought to lead to the formation of hybrid swarms and the loss of monophyletic evolutionary lineages. Previous studies of this phenomenon, however, indicated that hybrid swarms were rare except when...

Comparative Thermal Requirements of Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Rainbow Trout: Implications for Species Interactions and Development of Thermal Protection Standards

—Water temperature appears to play a key role in determining population persistence of westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi, but specific thermal performance and survival criteria have not been defined. We used the acclimated chronic exposure laboratory method to determine upper thermal tolerances and growth optima of westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout O. mykiss, a pot...

The future of subalpine forests in the Southern Rocky Mountains: Trajectories for Pinus aristata genetic lineages

Like many other high elevation alpine tree species, Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata Engelm.) may be particularly vulnerable to climate change. To evaluate its potential vulnerability to shifts in climate, we defined the suitable climate space for each of four genetic lineages of bristlecone pine and for other subalpine tree species in close proximity to bristlecone pine forests....

The Influence of an Extensive Dust Event on Snow Chemistry in the Southern Rocky Mountains

In mid-February 2006, windstorms in Arizona, Utah, and western Colorado generated a dust cloud that distributed a layer of dust across the surface of the snowpack throughout much of the Colorado Rockies; it remained visible throughout the winter. We compared the chemical composition of snowfall and snowpack collected during and after the dust deposition event with pre-event snow at 17 sites ext...
